Selena Gomez Cries: ‘I Lost Sight of Who I Was’

(ABC News) – Selena Gomez may be in the news for reconnecting with Justin Bieber in Austin at South by Southwest, but she also shared a more personal story with fans aside from all the gossip.

“I’m here to just tell you my path,” she said during the We Day California conference on Wednesday. “I don’t like be honest with press and interviews, I like being honest with you.”

After explaining how her mother had her at age 16 and worked four jobs to make Gomez’s life better, the “Come & Get It” singer, 21, said that “when I was 7, I wanted to be an actress.”

“When I was 11, I had a casting director tell me I wasn’t strong enough to carry my own show,” she added. “It does more than knock the wind out of you, it crushes you when people try to tell you you’re not good enough.”

The singer said her mother got her through and two years later, she got her own show at 13.

Then, she revealed that some people around her might be bringing her down.

“I’m surrounded by people who are supposed to guide me and some of them have and others haven’t,” she said. “They pressure me, there’s so much pressure. ‘You gotta be sexy, you gotta be cute, you gotta be nice, you gotta be all these things.’”

She continued, breaking down a bit, saying, “They tell me what to wear, how to look, what I should say, how I should be. Until recently I had given into that pressure, I lost sight of who I was. I listened to opinions of people and I tried to change who I am because I thought others would accept me for it. And I realized I don’t know how to be anything but myself.”
